Dundonald is the latest modern links golf course in Scotland to receive huge and much-deserved acclaim. Despite only opening in 2005 Dundonald’s trajectory has been quite breathtaking. During that time, the links have hosted the Men’s Scottish Open, and 2022 sees the return of the Ladies Scottish Open, for the fourth time, which is also an LPGA event. The course has also just been confirmed as a Qualifying course for the Open Championship.

There are a number of reasons for these successes. Dundonald was designed by Kyle Phillips, who designed the magnificent Kingsbarns in Fife which is now recognised as one of Scotland’s very best courses. Phillips has embraced a Kingsbarns design philosophy that provides for generous and creative landing areas, saving the greatest challenges for the green complexes, which still fairly reward a well-planned shot. Due to the aforementioned winds, the course can play much longer than the card. The par 4’s play deceptively long, and I would say that the par 3’s are the true standouts of the course. The elevated par 3, 6th Hole, is brilliant at 170 yards, with a valley left and a pot bunker lurking amongst the seemingly safe haven of dunes behind the green.Dundonald Links has emerged as a highly enjoyable experience, with former areas of concern corrected. From just over 6,400 yards to tipped out at 7,300 yards. Dundonald Links is a first-rate Scottish Links experience.

The Dundonald experience begins at the gatehouse when the security man lifts the barrier to let you in – everyone from then on seem to know your name. It’s a mirror of the treatment you get at Loch Lomond but the course here on the Ayrshire coast is a true links layout and the polar opposite of the private layout on the shores of the famous loch.

Dundonald has since been on a proved to be links of some repute and was the proud host venue for the 2017 Scottish Open, which Rafa Cabrera-Bello won in a play-off. If you like the pampering that goes with golf at the top tracks then this is the place to enjoy such millionaire’s golf for a relatively modest green fee.

KILSPINDIE GOLF CLUB

Kilspindie Golf Club is a charming links golf course located on Scotland’s Golf Coast close to the elite courses of Muirfield, Gullane, and Renaissance Club.  From its very beginnings Kilspindie, as a golf club, built a reputation as a warm and welcoming Club.  To this day a warm welcome is extended to all golfers.

The course is also very popular with the growing society of Hickory Golfers and is a host course for the Scottish Hickory Golf Tour.  Few changes have been made to Kilspindie links in over a century, so golfers – irrespective of their standard of play – can continue to enjoy the same challenges as have so many in the past. The course is a magnet for hickory-shafted enthusiasts, and the Club can even arrange to hire you a set should you care to try it.

Kilspindie is a Hidden Gem that is simply a joy to play.  Although the course plays to just 5500 yards, from the Medal Tees, this Hidden Gem is likely to be one of your favourite golf experiences in all of Scotland.   You will need to be accurate and avoid its well-placed bunkers, perfect green complexes whilst you enjoy some spectacular views of the Firth of Forth and coast. There’s also the opportunity to experience a variety of birds, plants, and Marine Mammals such as Seals which are courtesy of the nearby nature reserve which is a breeding ground and resting place for many birds and wildlife.

Kilspindie has a wonderful variety of Par 3s. The 1st Hole – The Point is a 158 Yard hole with the green located directly in front of the Bay, The 8th Hole – Gosford Bay is 167 yards played over the Shoreline to a green protected by bunkers.  The 10th Hole – The Pond is a 152 Yard Hole played downhill towards the nature reserve and a protected green.  The 13th Hole – The Kirk is the final and Longest Par 3 at 182 Yards.  The green is framed by the ruins of a Dry Stane Dyke Wall, protected by Pot Bunkers,  and out of bounds to the right!. These wonderful par 3s together with their combination of long Par 4s, short drivable par 4s, and just one par 5 creates a unique fun golf experience that may remind you of why you fell in love with golf.

Although the par is 69, the Standard Scratch Score is 66 so that lets you know you should not be in for too torrid a time when playing here.  If the weather is not to harsh you can expect to experience a charming, old-fashioned, traditional Scottish links course.  Kilspindie is only one of the many golfing pearls in Scotland’s Golf Coast with courses strung out along the southern shores of the Firth of Forth.

The East Coast of Scotland and Fife is known as The Home of Golf.  In the mid-1500s, Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots played on the Links at St Andrew’s and kept a vacation cottage there, often doing her own shopping and cooking. An avid golfer who has been referred to as the “Mother of Golf,” the athletic Queen helped popularize the game. Unfortunately, her hobby was a factor in her demise. The daughter of the Scottish King James V, Stuart made a bold statement by playing a round of golf a few days after the murder of her estranged husband,

King James V was a frequent visitor to Aberlady in the early 16th century when he came for “the archery and golfing” though his attention for the ladies of nearby Gosford was also known to be another reason for his presence in the area! The former course at Aberlady was a short, 5-hole layout known as the Wanster course and it was built on holes seven to eleven of the present 18-hole layout. The club moved here four years after the breakup of Luffness Golf Club in 1894, when some members broke away to form.

Gullane Golf Club, located in the heart of Scotlands Golf Coast, boasts 3 wonderful courses.  Gullane 1 is the Championship Course where golf has been played since 1600.  The course is regarded as one of the finest links golf courses anywhere in Scotland.  Established as Gullane Golf Club in 1884 the course is carved into the ancient links turf offers a unique challenge for all golfers. In 2018, Gullane hosted the European Tour: the Aberdeen Standard Investments Scottish Open, won by Brandon Stone, was played over a Championship composite course featuring 16 holes from Gullane No. 1 and two holes from Gullane No. 2.

With every hole having its own distinct character, Gullane No. 1 is both memorable and enjoyable, and undoubtedly one of Scotland’s finest and most scenic links courses.

The architect, of Course No. 1 is unknown but golf has been played over the links since the 1600s. The type of grass is predominantly Bent on the fairways and Fescue on the greens. There are 124 bunkers scattered across the course and the average green size is 550m Sq. There are distance markers on the sprinkler heads on Gullane No. 1 to the front, middle, and back of each green.

Gullane 1 has received much acclaim over the years from The Golf Industry.  The National Club Golfer Magazine rated Gullane 1 as the 18th best course in the Top 100 Courses in Scotland. Golf Magazine (USA) recognised Gullane No. 1 as having one of the best holes in the world in the form of the spectacular par five 3rd.  PGA.com rated Gullane as the world’s 5th most picturesque golf spot. Golf Digest ranked Guallne Scotland’s 20th Best Course in Scotland.

CASTLE STUART LINKS

Castle Stuart is the newest Championship Links Golf Courses in the Scottish Highlands. Designed by the late Golf Visionary Mark Parsinen who saw it as his personal destiny to create a major golfing resort at Castle Stuart and the ‘Pebble Beach of the British Isles’.

After their highly acclaimed work at the Kingsbarns Links in Fife.  Parsinen once again worked with fellow American Gil Hanse on Castle Stuart.  Together they once again produced a modern, visually stunning, Championship course.  The course opened for play in the summer of 2009 and just 18 months later staged the Scottish Open.  This was the first time such a major European Tour golf event had been held in the Scottish Highlands.

Castle Stuart is a modern links Golf Course with great character. The Highland’s setting is simply stunning and the design of the course is magnificent with views over The Moray Firth to the Black Isle. Every hole on the course is memorable in one way or another. The Castle Stuart golf course was built on a magnificent piece of land that runs along an estuary with spectacular views overlooking the Moray Firth, has so far held the prestigious Scottish Open four times in 2011, 2012,-2013 and again in 2016.

The course is widely regarded as a contemporary classic among Scotland’s rich heritage of links courses,.  Castle Stuart succeeds as a course that challenges the very best players in the world but is enjoyable and playable for every-day golfers of all abilities.  The fairways are wide and generous so not too intimidating off the tee.  No forced carries and plenty of safe or bail out options. Also, expect some risk or reward holes with those taking the braver line likely to be rewarded with easier approach shots into the infinite greens.  The course looks stunning from every tee box.

After your pre-round warm-up on the superb range and huge putting green in front of the great Art Deco clubhouse, it’s a short walk to the first tee where you are greeted by a decent length par 4 with the estuary to contend with on your right and a lovely fairway stretching out in front of you.

Cruden Bay is a thrilling and visually stunning golf course located on Scotland’s east coast just 23 miles north of Aberdeen. Even in Scotland, the Home of Golf,  it’s very rare to find a course with such incredible, elevated views of the sea.  Expect to experience the sense of seclusion created by numerous towering sandhills,  some 3 stories high,  enabling that wonderful feeling of intimacy.

Golfers will enjoy the surprise of not knowing what comes next and the highlights that lie in store ahead.  This is part of Cruden Bays charm.  There are a few quirks such as blind shots and back to back par 3s but your focus will be occupied by navigating some of the most fearsome sand dunes in Scotland. This is the course that keeps on giving so you should expect to discover some unexpected features and enjoy some great surprises during your round.

So If you love the idea of playing a wild-looking, rugged course with Huge sand dunes, rolling fairways, and incredible elevation changes this would be a superb choice.  The golfing test here has remained consistent for almost 100 years.

.Originally designed by the legendary Old Tom Morris who was assisted by Archie Simpson a Professional Golfer and the Head Greenkeeper at the nearby Royal Aberdeen Golf links. The course open for play in 1899 however it is believed that golf has been played on these links since 1791.

Tom Simpson and Herbert Fowler were brought in to make some revisions to Cruden Bay’s design in 1926.  They helped incorporate more of the natural elements of the land and dunes to wonderful effect.  This created a thrilling duneland that was designed for golf whilst adhering to much of the course’s original routing.

Considered a masterpiece by many you can expect a thrilling golf experience as you navigate the huge sand dunes, elevated tees and rolling fairways with its humps and hollows. The punchbowl greens are fun to play and the spectacular views of the partially wooded glens set against the backdrop of the North Sea will stay with you. The 4th hole at Cruden Bay is called Port Erroll.  It is described in the book ‘A Century of Golf at Cruden Bay’  as follows: “Thus named because the Water of Cruden runs along the left side of the fairway, with the old fishing village of Port Erroll on the opposite bank. The harbour is itself visible in the near distance. This is one of Simpson’s best par threes and one of Cruden Bay’s best holes. Playing straight towards the sea (and often into the wind) from an elevated tee carved out of one imposing sandhill across a deep grassy hollow to an elevated green carved out of the facing sandhill. The tee shot must carry straight and all the way to the green – it is serious business, indeed

Cruden Bay is a must-play course as it provides great entertainment with its stunning panoramic sea views framed with a perfect white sandy beach, driveable par fours, blind drives, back-to-back par threes.

It is important to manage your expectations of what kind of experience to expect when you play the Old Course as Some golfers can leave disappointed.  The Old Course is certainly fascinating and in wonderful condition but it is not the greatest most stunning golf course you will ever play.  The experience is more about the personal connection you will make with the most historic course in golf and as you walk in the footsteps of greatness and play a course shaped by the elements over the centuries.  This is golf’s birthplace.  The experience is more spiritual than physical.

Bernard Darwin and Tom Doak said the following about the Old Course :

Bernard Darwin in his 1910 book, The Golf Courses of the British Isles  “There are those who do not like the golf at St Andrew’s,”

‘The St Andrews Old course itself usually isn’t an instant hit, it’s a golf course you have to get to know and love. First-timers might be somewhat disappointed. It’s also unlikely that the Old course will feel familiar when you play it for the first time (except perhaps the 1st, 17th, and 18th). Television pictures tend to make the ground look very flat, but the humps, hollows, and ripples in the fairways are much deeper when you get out onto the course, as indeed are the pot bunkers. Dr. Alister MacKenzie wrote in his book, <i>The Spirit of St Andrews</i>: “A good golf course is like good music or anything else: it is not necessarily a course which appeals the first time one plays over it; but one which grows on a player the<a Tom Doak’s Little Red Book of Golf Course Architecture the author goes a long way towards explaining why the Old course isn’t an
instant hit:

“The Old Course would never receive the acclaim it has today if we hadn’t been told for eons how great it is. It is the great golf
course that most players tend to dismiss as overrated after their first round – of course, that has something to do with its fame too. But it seems to me that the two reasons for it are simple: 1) most tourists don’t get to see the most interesting hole locations, which are reserved for important events,  and 2) golfers can’t make out the strategies of the holes because the features are so difficult to see.

However, it goes without saying that every golfer should play this course at least once, preferably multiple times. It sends shivers down the spine when the starter announces your name, setting those first tee nerves jangling. Oozing familiarity with names like the Swilcan Burn, the bridge over the burn—thought to have been built by the Romans—and the Valley of Sin. There are many memorable holes on the Old Course, but one in particular, the 17th, the Road hole, is probably the most famous hole in the world.

And a word about the greens: they are the most extraordinary and interesting putting surfaces in the world. There is the little definition between where the fairway, fringe, and green stops or starts, and the fairways are probably faster and certainly more undulating than the average golf club’s greens. And the size of them is absolutely staggering—they are gigantic—occupying more than an acre in some cases. When you are on the green, forget about having the pin tended—take a pair of binoculars instead.

Mother Nature was largely the architect of the Old Course, but some credit must be given to Allan Robertson. In 1848, he widened fairways, created the now-famous gigantic double greens, and built the infamous Road Hole green. Robertson’s protégé, Old Tom Morris, also made further revisions to the Old course down the years.  If I could be certain that everyone was intimately acquainted with the Old Course at St Andrew’s,” wrote Tom Simpson, “my task, in saying what constitutes a good golf course would be a very simple one. I should just say St Andrews and leave it at that’.

Golf is recorded as having been played on the hallowed Links at Carnoustie since 1560.  Robert Chambers an Edinburgh author and publisher laid out the first course in 1834. The Carnoustie Golf Club was formed 5 years later. The First 10 holes were actually created by Allan Robertson Scotland’s first professional golfer who made a living from club making, caddying, and playing for money.  Incredibly he never lost!. His apprentice at that time was none other than Tom Morris aged just 14 years old.

The course evolved significantly when George Morris became the greenkeeper in 1855 before his younger brother Tom Morris created the first 18 hole course in 1867.  The course stayed the same until 1926 when the legendary gold architect James Braid was brought in to upgrade the course to the standard required to host the Open Championship. The game of golf has played an important part in the town’s life ever since.

Since then, Carnoustie’s Championship Course has become known for its wonderful conditioning and it is widely recognised as the toughest Open Championship Course.   Over the years the club has removed thousands of pine trees that were planted after the war leaving a beautiful links that will hold your interest throughout.

Expect to play one of Scotland’s very best, toughest, and historic links courses.  There are no wonderful views here to behold.  Just an authentic golf experience that is bigger, grander, and more majestic than many of the world’s top courses. There are no weak holes either and you are likely to be astounded by one of the best and toughest finishes in world golf.  Just remember that things can go very badly here for you in a heartbeat so stay focused until you safely walk off the 18th green.   There is after all a reason that this course is affectionately known as ‘Carnastie’.

On a good day, if you can avoid the bunkers, Carnoustie can sometimes be surprisingly scoreable as many of the links fairways are reasonably wide and don’t have many hanging lies. The routing of the holes also changes direction and means that the wind will sometimes be with you so you’re not getting beaten up for 18 holes.  On any given day, the weather will play a significant role in your overall enjoyment of the course.

Most golfers do enjoy the layout of the course.  The bunkers are really well placed off the tee to stop and make you think.  Each hole can be played in a variety of ways so you really need to be sensible and keep your wits about you if you want to score. The greens and surrounding areas are immaculate so it’s always possible to run a 7 iron up onto the green.

The Feature Hole at Carnoustie is the No. 6 hole with its Risk or Reward option from the Tee.  It is a tough par 5 with a split fairway and deep bunkers. The safer percentage play is going up the much wider right side of the fairway but the landing area is very small.  The left side of the fairway has a much better line for the approach shot into the green. However, with out-of-bounds and deep bunkers in play, it is very risky to take this on.

In 1953, during his only appearance in the British Open, Ben Hogan played up the more dangerous narrow left fairway bunkers on one side of the tight landing area, out-of-bounds on the other—all four rounds of the tournament. All four days he hit his target. And he won the tournament. After that, the hole became nicknamed “Hogan’s Alley.” In 1953, and for many years after, the hole’s official name was the much plainer “Long.” But during a ceremony in 2003, Carnoustie officially renamed the hole Hogan’s Alley.  Today there is a plaque on the hole, also commemorating the golfer’s British Open win in 1953.

OLD MACHRIHANISH

Machrihanish Golf Club is an authentic Scottish golf links located on a remote Peninsula off the West Coast of Scotland.  The area known as The Mull of Kintyre, was made famous by Paul McCartney who had a number 1 hit record in 1977.

The course is famous for its wonderful opening hole, designed by the legendary Old Tom Morris, which requires an opening tee shot over the Atlantic Ocean to the first fairway.  You will need to decide how much risk to take and decide your line. Many golfers who underestimate the wind start their round with the unforgettable experience of playing their 2nd shot from the beach!.  Machrihanish has self-proclaimed this hole as ‘the best opening hole in world golf’. At 436 yards, it is a scary and intimidating start more so when the wind is gusting.  If you enjoy links golf Machrihanish will be right up your street. Weather permitting you can expect a fabulous day and experience.

Machrihanish, which was originally named The Kintyre, opened in 1876  with 10 holes.  The name was changed to Machrihanish and the course was quickly expanded to 12 holes using some land on the north side of the burn.  In 1879 Old Tom Morris created the Masterpiece that is the opening hole and also redesigned and extended the course to 18 holes using some newly acquired land on the other side of the burn.  To mark the occasion, a prize match was held between Old Tom Morris, Jim Morris (Champion Golfer in 1876) and Bob Martin

The golf at Machrihanish is outstanding as are the magnificent views across to the islands of Arran, Jura and Islay.  The greens are believed to be Old Tom Morris’s best set of greens in Scotland.  The fairways are always immaculate and the front nine is widely considered to be amongst the best in Scotland.

This Hidden Gem is a lot of fun to play with its blind shots into greens, holes that are sunk into valleys.  You should expect to use every club in your bag and all of your creativity as you navigate the heavy rough, sand dunes, contours of the land to get your ball on the green. The classic links holes are the fifth, which is another par 4 with its fairway like an elephant’s graveyard, the 10th, a clever dogleg par 5, and the par-3 15th, a one-shotter with real difficulty if the elusive green is missed from the tee.

WESTERN GAILES GOLF

SUMMARY

Western Gailes is fun to play Scottish links course located in Ayrshire just down the Firth of Clyde coast from The Open Championship venue Royal Troon.  The Course has a very linear routing that directly follows the narrow strip of land between the railway and the Firth of Clyde. The first four holes follow the coast straight out North.  Golfers then before turn around and head back South with the next nine holes along Irvine Bay. The Remaining holes follow the Train Tracks back to the clubhouse.

Western Gailes is one of Ayrshire’s most acclaimed Hidden Gems and holds its own despite its close proximity to the historic courses of Prestwick, where the first Open Championship was held in 1860, and Royal Troon. The views over the Firth of Forth seduces golfers into loving these narrow links just as much, if not more, than its prestigious neighbors. GLENEAGLES QUEENS COURSE

The World-Class Gleneagles Golf Estate is celebrated for having 3 of the top inland courses in Scotland.  Kings, Queens and PGA Centenary.  Over the years Gleneagles has played host to some of the world’s top golfers, celebrities, and championship golf tournaments.  The Queens Course, which was designed by renowned Scottish Architect James Braid,  is the shortest of Gleneagle’s three courses. Queen’s was designed to be a reprieve from the tougher and adjacent Kings course.  However despite having a front that plays just 3,192 yards long the challenge and difficulty of Queens are often underestimated.  Over the years some of the best golfers in the world have found the course to be a good test to make par into the predominant fresh southwesterly breeze.

Due to the Queen’s shortish length.  James Braid who was known as a designer who throws in plenty of challenges for golfers of all abilities did not disappoint.  The course follows the hollows of the land and threads through high ridges on the north and west sides of the estate.  Expect to experience beautiful woodland settings, lochs, ditches, and water hazards, as well as many moorland characteristics.

The Queen’s Course completed a renovation program in 2017. Eighty-nine bunkers of the original bunkers were rebuilt to improve drainage and enhance the sand line visibility on each of these hazards. Fairway mowing lines were also modified to return the course to James Braid’s original design plan. Additionally, the 16th green, which is laid out in a natural bowl shape, was also upgraded to improve drainage.

To sum up.  The Queen’s delivers many of the same ‘to die for’ scenery as the King’s course next door but has fewer blind shots. Many golfers and locals are torn between the Queens and The Kings as they are both unique and extraordinary in their own way.

Located in the heart of Perthshire, just 60 minutes from St Andrews. Over the years in addition to hosting many Championships. The resort has become a playground for some of the world’s top golfers and the rich and famous. The PGA Centenary, The Queen’s, and The King’s Courses are all rated as amongst the Top 10 best non-links golf courses in Scotland.

The Centenary Course at Gleneagles was designed and created by Jack Nicklaus and the eyes of the golfing world were on his new course when it staged the 2014 Ryder Cup. Unlike the neighbouring King’s and Queen’s Courses, the PGA course has a North American parkland design did invoke some controversy as the Ryder Cup was being hosted on a non-Scottish course layout for the first time.  However, since hosting the Ryder Cup the course has grown in popularity.

Nicklaus’s new PGA Centenary Course offers a stark contrast to the original and more established King’s and Queen’s Courses and is a great addition to the Gleneagles Golf Resort. One thing all 3 courses have in common is the same ‘to die for’ spectacular views of the beautiful Perthshire countryside. The Centenary is currently the longest non-links course in Scotland Measuring well in excess of 7,000 yards.  The course has 5 tee blocks to provide a great test for golfers of all abilities.

In keeping with the goto characteristics of a Nicklaus design.  Big hitters can be aggressive off the tee as there is plenty of fairway to hit.  That said the Centenary course is truly a 2nd Shot course.  Once you have located your drive the real fun begins. Now to hit the green you need to avoid the Huge Undulating greens, deep, well-placed bunkers, and the strategically placed water hazards. Manage these obstacles and your round and time spent at Gleneagles will be an unforgettable experience that you will always treasure.

This Hidden Gem which opened in 2009 was designed by David McLay Kidd.  Scottish Course Designer Kidd whose other recent masterpieces include The St Andrews Castle Course, Bandon Dunes, and Cabot Cliffs the number 1 course in Canada.  Mclay is renowned for creating some of the world’s most natural, wild, and dramatic looking golf courses. Other than the tee blocks and greens.  The vast majority of Machrihanish, such as the sand dunes, have been created by nature itself and the Scottish weather!

Built on once protected land discovered by Golf Legend Old Tom Morris more than 125 years ago.   McLay turns the clock back to allows modern-day golfers to use their imagination to hit golf shots that are no longer required in the modern game.  Experience pure links golf in the most natural and exhilarating setting.  You will be required to think your way around the course.  Plan your attack, use your creativity, and enjoy the experience.

FAIRMONT ST ANDREWS -Torrance

Fairmont’s Torrance and its sister course Kittocks are a wonderful addition to St Andrews and The Home of Golf.  The Torrance course was built-in 1991 to satisfy the ever-increasing number of worldwide golfers arriving in Scotland to experience this mecca of Links golf and its many world-class courses.   Despite being relatively new the courses have grown quickly in stature and now regularly host The Seniors Open and from 2020 The European Tour. The Torrance was also the Final Qualifying Venue for the 2010 Open Golf Championship. That same year, the World Deaf Golf Championships and the Scottish Seniors Open were held on the Torrance.

The Torrance Course at St Andrew’s Bay was designed by Denis Griffiths, Gene Sarazen and Legendary Scottish Ryder Cup golfer and winning Captain Sam Torrance.  Once flat farmland the course was carved out of an incredible piece of land on the clifftop above St Andrews Bay.  The course overlooks the North Sea and plays 7,230-yards long.

In 2009, the course was redesigned by golf architect Gary Stephenson who is now the head of Phil Mickelson’s Golf Course design operations.  The changes included eight new holes, in preparation for the 2009 Scottish Seniors Open.

The 360-degree views are simply stunning.  Set on 520 acres of land you never seem to be too far away from the beautiful 5-star Fairmont Hotel and Spa which is located in the very heart of award-winning Golf Resort.  Many of the hotel’s bedrooms and Lodges have wonderful course views or balconies where you can relax and watch the sunset over the bay.  Despite opening as recently as 2001 the course has matured and somehow looks timeless as though it has been there forever.

The Torrance Links course is very playable.  Expect a Scottish style Links design with strategically placed traditional revetted bunkering throughout.  These bunkers are deep and should be avoided at all costs.  Make no mistake there is danger around every corner.  There are plenty of hazards to avoid such as High deep rough, Gorse, Cliff edges, and small internal lochs throughout the course.  All together they help make this a formidable test of golf. The final stretch is dramatic and visually stunning as you follow the cliff back from the 14th green to the Clubhouse.   At the end of the round, a visit to the clubhouse with its elevated views is a wonderful place to discuss the day’s adventures.

ST ANDREWS – Jubilee

The Jubilee Course opened in 1897 to commemorate Queen Victorias Diamond Jubilee.  Originally a 12 hole course for Ladies and beginners to work on their skills.  The links is now is considered by golfers to be the most challenging of the 7 St Andrews Links Courses.

The Jubilee is the closest course to the sea.  It occupies a very narrow piece of land between the New Course and the coastline.   As a result, the fairways are very narrow and the close proximity to the sea makes the weather and playing conditions very changeable

In 1905 the rising demand for golf resulted in the course being expanded to 18 holes. in 1938 by Champion Golfer Willie Auchterlonie made further improvements to the course such as elevated tee decks.

In 1988 The R & A decided that the Jubilee would be modernised and brought up to a Championship standard. That prestigious project was given to distinguished amateur golfer David Steele now known as ‘The Open Doctor’.  Steele gave the course some real tough characteristics.  He did this by narrowing many fairways, introducing out of bounds boundaries and Deep (Hell) Bunkers on many of the holes.  His masterstroke was the further narrowing of the fairways.  This resulted in a very narrow first cut of rough immediately followed by thick wild rough and Gorse.  These changes made the course the challenging Championship Course that it is today.

The Jubilee will be an unforgettable challenge and experience for all golfers.  Expect tough greens and remember to stay well away from the gorse and deep Rough.  If the wind is blowing you really need to hit the ball straight and keep your wits about you until your safely back in the majestic clubhouse.

HEATHLANDS COURSE

The Dukes Golf Course has a Story to tell.  St Andrews only Heathland course was actually the brainchild of The St Andrews Old Course Hotel.  Despite its world-class location overlooking the Old Course, the hotel has no privileged access to the Old Course and its Tee Times.  As a five-star hotel whose clientele is synonymous with elite golf.  It was deemed essential to be able to offer guests guaranteed tee times on a superb Championship course. The only way to do that was to build The Dukes.

The Duke’s was carefully planned and designed to complement the classic links courses along the coastline and to enhance St Andrew’s standing as the leading destination for golfers.  Originally designed by 5 Times Champion Golfer Peter Thomson and his partner Ross Perrett. Their concept for the course was simple  “a golf course should grow out of the land’.  Together they created a course that would be shaped by the elements, challenging and have 5 tee decks making it scalable for all golfers.

The Duke’s Course in St Andrews opened for play in July 1995 to great Fanfare. HRH The Duke of York, Prince Andrew, who played an inaugural round with British Lions and Scottish Rugby Captain Gavin Hastings OBE.

The course was improved further in 2006 by Tim Liddy, a then student of Pete Dye the renowned golf course architect.  Liddy changed the course to a more traditional Heathland style making improvements to the bunker layouts, drainage, and adding three new holes.

The Duke’s has matured over the years and now offers 18 magnificent holes in the delightful surrounding of Craigtoun Park, a spectacular location overlooking the historic university town and Fife’s beautiful coastline. One of Par 4s, Braw View” provides an unparalleled and unforgettable panoramic view of St Andrews.

James Braid, 5 times Open Champion and renowned links golf course designer was born right here and the Legendary Old Tom Morris turned Elie into an 18 Hole course.

Elie is an exciting and challenging links golf course located in a corner pocket of land on the Fife coast. You will experience wind, weather changes, and spectacular scenery.  There are many unforgettable holes which follow the beautiful coastline.  On a good day you will be able to see over The Firth of Forth water to the East Coast of Scotland and Muirfield where the first 13 rules of golf were written in 1744.

The course at Elie is quirky.  There’s no par 5s, only 2 x par 3s, and lots of very strong 400-yard par 4 holes.  The course is certain to quickly capture your imagination as you encounter holes that run in all directions. Expect a fun round where you will need to be incredibly creative and take some risks just to play to your handicap!. If you are used to golfing in perfect weather in other parts of the world. Waterproofs would be a sound investment.  Whilst in Scotland you might want to keep your waterproofs permanently in your golf bag until back at the airport.

Located in the gorgeous East Neuk of Fife – Elie is within easy reach of Edinburgh and just 20 minutes from St Andrews. The course is open all year round, offering up its charms to visitors whether they come in the height of summer or the depth of winter.

Lundin Golf Club is an authentic Scottish links golf course carved into a wonderful piece of land overlooking the Firth of Forth.  Recognised for some of the truest greens in Scotland.  This challenging ‘British Open Final Qualifier’ course is often overlooked by golfers because of the sheer number of world-class links golf courses located in Fife.  St Andrews the mecca of Golf,  with its 7 fine courses is just 10 miles away and Kingsbarns and the new Dumbarnie Links are also right on its doorstep.

Laid out East to West.  Some of the holes you see today were originally the work of Old Tom Morris in the mid-1800s.  The course was redesigned by renowned designer James Braid in 1908 after an amalgamation of the original 9 holes and 9 more holes on the ground that formerly occupied by the Lundin Ladies Golf Club to the North of the railway line.

The new Lundin Links challenges golfers with its complex array of challenges such as blind drives, elevated greens, open burns, internal and external out of bounds, and too many strategically placed bunkers (many Deep) to count.  Also expect incredible views especially holes 1-5, narrow fairways, strong winds that blow in from the Firth of Forth estuary, and the changing Scottish weather!.  Lundin is a lovely hidden gem and should be a serious contender for your playlist.

Kingsbarns reopened as a Golf Course for the third time in 2000. Recognised by golfers as one of the most scenic and challenging links golf courses in Scotland. Expect to experience a lot of elevation changes and be enthralled by the spectacular scenery. Kingsbarns is a new jewel that shines bright in the Scottish golf scene. After your round be sure to spend some time at the beautiful clubhouse.

From the moment you arrive at Kingsbarns Golf Course, you will sense that you’re in for something special during and after your round.  If you like whisky then you will have already driven past and planned a post-round visit to Kingsbarns Distillery.  Kingsbarns staff are friendly, the practice facilities are top class and the Pro shop is well stocked.  There’s just enough time to buy a few authentic Scottish golf collectibles to take back to the friends you left behind!

The course routing is ingenious, crescent-shaped as it follows the Fife coast.  There are holes with separate levels providing sea views from every fairway.

Golf has been played in and around Kingsbarns since 1793. The original Kingsbarns Golfing Society was established in 1815 and its members played on the original 9-hole Kingsbarns course until it closed in 1850

The course was re-established in 1922 and the golfing society was reformed as Kingsbarns Golf Club which remains in existence today. Course Designer Willie Auchterlonie laid out the course in 1922 which closed again at the onset of the Second World War. Land mines were buried on the course site as part of the national security defence effort and the ground reverted to rough pasture.

Construction of the current Kingsbarns Golf Links began in November 1997 under the direction of architect Kyle Phillips and the course opened in July 2000. The course has no membership and welcomes visitors.

St Andrews Links – Eden

The Eden Course at St Andrew’s is loved by locals and widely regarded by the vast majority of golfers as the most fun and exhilarating of the 7 St Andrews Trust courses. The front 9, in particular, has a little bit of everything. You are sure to enjoy the 230 Yard driveable par 4 which plays along the very edge of the Eden Estuary and the 2 tier Par 3 green which slopes from back to front. Anything played long here will filter back to the hole. Also if you get the chance to play the 7th Hole from the Back Tees you are in for a treat. The back tee will test your metal as you drive your ball over the Eden Estuary to a tight fairway. This is similar to Hell Hole at nearby Balcomie Links at Crail and will be carved into your memory banks of great golf holes.

The Eden was designed by Harry Colt a local member of the R&A. Colt was an up and coming course designer who received some acclaim for his work at Sunningdale. His ingenious use of Pot Bunkers, Gorse, Heather, ravines, and some Internal boundaries results in many quirky risk and reward holes. Did I mention that there’s also water in play on 5 of the holes?….so pick your best 14 weapons and get ready for a wild ride!. Many good scores have come undone in the last few holes so keep your wits about you until your safely back in the clubhouse.

St Andrews Links – Castle

The long-awaited and highly acclaimed Castle Course opened for play at St Andrew’s in 2008.   The Course, which is built on a clifftop follows the St Andrews coastline and was built on reclaimed land.  Golfers should expect a traditional golf experience but with a visual twist.  The Castle Course offers a very different golfing experience from Trust’s other six golf courses.  The course has a raw natural look and has some incredible holes that are simply a joy to play.  The 17th hole ‘Braes’ is a visually intimidating par 3 where you will hit over the luscious gorge,  likely into a prevailing wind from one protruded cliff top to another.  This signature hole is set high on the cliff-edge so you can expect to enjoy spectacular views of St Andrew’s old town and the Coast. The par 5 18th ‘Rock and Spindle’ with its risk and reward options runs along the top of the cliff is an exciting finishing hole.

The course which plays to 6759 yards from the back tees was designed and crafted by David McLay Kidd, who created the highly acclaimed Brandon Dunes Masterpiece in Oregon.  Kidd is known for creating traditional style courses but has a wonderful way of working with the land to create unique and visually stunning course designs. The new Castle course takes its place amongst the Trusts other 6 courses and its challenging playability and wonderful scenery is a perfect addition to this Golf mecca

COURSE SUMARY

Balcomie Links, founded in 1786, is the seventh oldest golf club in the world. This hidden gem is located on the Fife coast just 8 miles from St Andrews. Designed by The legendary Old Tom Morris you should expect stunning views, fantastic use of the rocky terrain and many wonderful holes. The traditional links features some fantastic risk-reward holes such as ‘Hell Hole’ where you drive out over the Sea and sandy beach to a tight fairway. Its called Hell Hole for a good reason. If the wind blows a perfect drive is required to find any semblance of safety. Anything else is likely to result in disaster or walk of shame to the beach!. You can bail out left but need to avoid the huge strategically placed bunker.

The course is fun to play and has many wonderful features.  Many of the holes are framed by the Rocky terrain and there are a few Clifftop greens where you only see the very tip of the flag to navigate. There’s also a lovely wee barn on the first hole that plays from a clifftop to a wide fairway below. Stay left to avoid some knee-high fescue and prepare to hit a great pitch over a bunker to a blind green and avoid the surrounding burn at the same time. Playing this hole in the strong wind will remind you to never again hit a 60-degree wedge into the Scottish wind.

The par 3s are long and you need to carefully plan your approach. After the round, there’s a lovely Cliff Top Clubhouse that looks out over the 18th Hole. You’ll see some wonderful antiques that go back to 1786 and artifacts in the huge display cabinet. The Clubhouse is very friendly, not pretentious and perfect for refreshment and perhaps some wonderful Scottish Fish and Chips after your round.

THE GLEN – NORTH BERWICK

If you are in the North Berwick area make time to play one of Scotland’s very best Hidden Gems.   The Glen Golf Course, which is also known as North Berwick’s East Links,  is sometimes overlooked by golfers as a result of the world-class golf courses which surround it.

The Glen is set on a clifftop high above the Town.  You can expect a visually stunning golf experience with wonderful elevated views of North Berwick, The Bass Rock, The historic Tantallon Castle, and the beach which runs adjacent to a number of back 9 holes. On a clear day, you can see over the Firth of Forth to Fife to the new Dunbarnie Links.

Expect numerous good golf holes and some of the best green complexes (3rd Hole) in the area.  Sea Hole, the spectacular 13th, is set on the edge of the cliff where the wind howls.  This hole is fun to play and is one of the most photographed Par 3s in Scotland.

With some huge elevation changes, some parts require steep climbs.  If you need a golf cart you should book early as there is a limited number available [£25]. Like any links course, It is not difficult to lose balls so make sure you carry some spares.

I’m glad Jeff and Harris, the two first-timers, got the chance to experience this wonderful links while the rest of us were delighted to return.

Prestwick Golf Club

If you are interested in the history of golf then Prestwick Golf Club, the birthplace of The Open Championship in 1860, is a must-play.  Prestwick, located on the West Coast of Scotland in Ayrshire is one of the world’s oldest golf clubs. The club is steeped in the history of golf.  Renowned Father of Golf and acclaimed course designer Old Tom Morris, then just 30 years old, was appointed from St. Andrews to be the first ‘Keeper of the Green’, as well as Ball and Club Maker. The club purchased two cottages opposite the Red Lion Inn, one to be the clubhouse and the other to accommodate Tom Morris and his family.  Both buildings still exist to this day but have been reconstructed.

Old Tom Morris laid out the original Prestwick course, the first of many that he was to do. A stone cairn, to the west of the Clubhouse, marks the first tee of that 12-hole course. The old first hole measured 578 yards 1 foot and 9 inches and stretched to what is now the 16th green. In 1870, Young Tom Morris holed out in 3 on his way to his third successive Open victory. This was in the days before par or bogey ratings, but on the assumed basis that it would have been given a bogey 6, then this could be considered the first known ‘albatross’.

Willie Park won the inaugural Open in 1860, staged on just 12 holes. The club has since been expanded to 18 holes and championship yardage. Be sure to stop into the clubhouse after your round to examine the many historical artifacts preserved here over the club’s incredible history.

Prestwick has many defences and audacious features which can frustrate first-time visitors.  Expect the unexpected as you encounter many blind shots, heavy gorse, and the evil 17th hole with the enormous “Sahara” bunker.

The Open Championship has been contested at Prestwick 24 times, second only to The Old Course at St. Andrews, but hasn’t hosted the event since 1925. The list of Open Champions at Prestwick is incredibly impressive and includes most of golf’s great players from that time, including Old Tom Morris (four-time Open Champion at Prestwick), his son Young Tom (four times), Willie Park Sr. (four times), Harry Vardon (three times) and James Braid (once).

While the course would likely still be a challenge for the world’s best, the land upon which the course lies and the surrounding infrastructure simply isn’t large enough to host an event of that magnitude any longer. Prestwick continues to regularly host major amateur championships, including the British Amateur, which has been played 11 times at the club, most recently in 2001.

Prestwick lies just off the Ayrshire coast and shares its northern boundary with Royal Troon GC.

Muirfield provides golfers with an experience that will last a lifetime.  Any visit to Scotland would not be complete without taking a pilgrimage to the Honourable Company of Edinburgh Golfers in Gullane who wrote the first 13 Rules of Golf in 1744.

Experience this world-class British Open rotation course and walk in the shadows of Champion Golfers Faldo, Els, Nicklaus,  Watson, and Trevino who all won the Claret on these links. The course which has a unique ingenious layout was originally designed by Old Tom Morris.  After your round you will be amazed by some of the artifacts you will see in this historic clubhouse which is steeped in Golf history.

And what a golf course this is! Muirfield is on the very short list of the most ingeniously bunkered golf courses in the world, with very well-defined edge work, some incredible artistic flair, and most significantly, some of the most superb and strategic bunker positioning I’ve ever seen. There is great variety in shot values throughout and the greens are well-contoured, very well protected and all provide great interest both on the putting surfaces themselves and in the immediate surroundings.

The fact that this was accomplished on what would normally be considered a pretty routine and unremarkable piece of land, set well away from the sea, further accentuates the greatness of the design.

The club is steeped in history and that’s never more apparent than when you are walking through the clubhouse and seeing the incredible artifacts lovingly displayed throughout. The locker room is a treat and as indicated, the famous Muirfield lunch is not to be missed.
